Crafting Your Message – How to Effectively Educate Elected Officials About Your Work

March 4, 2026 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EST

This is a virtual Lunch and Learn to prepare for Survivor Services Day at the Capitol 2026. Attendance is for organizations attending that event.

Join MCEDSV for an engaging and practical training designed to help member programs confidently communicate with elected officials, without engaging in lobbying. This session will break down the essentials of educating policymakers about your services, the needs of survivors, and the impact of your work, all while staying within the boundaries of what nonprofit organizations are permitted to do under state and federal law. Participants will learn how to clearly frame their message, share compelling data and stories, and build constructive relationships with legislators and their staff. We’ll walk through real-world scenarios, offer tips for preparing for legislative meetings, and clarify the differences between education, advocacy, and lobbying. Whether you’re new to policy conversations or looking to strengthen your communication skills, this training will equip you with tools to speak with confidence and purpose.
